Product Review: Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Dry Shampoo

Hello MYD Beauties!
I have a new FAVORITE dry shampoo! But first let me give you a little information about my search for the perfect product.
I just so happen to be one of those women who have relished the trend of washing our hair less and less. I am sold on the idea that it not only saves me time in the morning, but also keeps my hair and scalp healthier by not stripping it with cleaners on a daily basis. With that I will also let you know that my skin tends to be a little on the dryer side, and therefor so does is my hair. I mention that knowing that if you’re a woman with a little bit of an oilier scalp HAVE NO FEAR, along with talking about this product I have some usage tips that will even help the oiliest of hair stretch that extra day!  So, without further ado lets get on with the review…
I have TRIED.THEM.ALL! From inexpensive, to way out of budget, from brunette to powder white, and let me tell you that Living Proof “Perfect Hair Day” Dry Shampoo is the bees knees.
lp.jpg
Here is the break down. It runs about $22 dollars for a 4oz. bottle, which I know is a little on the pricey end, but worth it. It is an aerosol spray that like a lot of dry shampoos comes out white. If you are a blonde, then this is no problem, but for dark brunettes myself I was pleasantly surprised when the white powder easily blended away.
It will cleanse the hair and leave it smelling fresh and clean. It will even leave you with freshly blown out oomph and body, which is a great plus. And even though you can feel a bit of product in the hair it is not anything like some of the heavier residue dry shampoos on the market. This product does exactly what it says it is going to do, makes my hair look, feel, and smell super clean.
Now for the skeptics. I have had clients tell me that they simply HAVE to wash their hair every day or every other day. If thats the case okay, but I encourage you to try and cut back. It helps your hair stay healthy by distributing natural oils from the scalp to the shafts and ends of that hair, and because you are blow drying less you hair will also benefit from less heat damage. Also, if you color your hair or have extensions washing less will help extend your time between visits to the salon. Win. Win. So here are a few tips when using dry shampoo.
1. Don’t wait till it is to late. I will usually apply dry shampoo to my hair on the second day whether it needs it or not. That way the product is in my hair giving me great volume and absorbing excess oil over time.
2. Hit it where it counts. For a bottle of $22 dry shampoo I want to use it sparingly, so if I can help it I will lift up the hair on either side of my part and right around my hairline and only spray that. That is usually the area that needs it the most and what people will notice.
3. Don’t brush through to quickly. We are tempted to spray the product in and quickly rub out that white powder look, but here is another option. I will spray the product before I head into the shower, put my hair up in a ponytail and allow the product some time to absorb the oil close to the scalp before brushing it through. You can also apply this trick by spraying before bed and waking up with fresh locks in the morning!
All in all, dry shampoo is a product that everyone is making and with so many options it is hard to know which ones truly work. For me this is the hands down winner, and as a person who enjoys switching it up and trying new things I am currently on my 2nd bottle and not planning to change my loyalty any time soon. I hope you give it a try and let me know what you think.
Happy Great Hair Days!
Caroline

MYD Favorite Summer Makeup Products

Hi there, Makeup for Your Day readers! So we all know that as an artist and as individuals we all have our favorite tried and true products that we absolutely would not be able to live without. Then we have those that we tend to rotate out seasonally due to the changes in our skin, the changes in weather, and our changes in daily activities.

Today I am going to go through some of my personal FAVORITE summer beauty products. Ones that I have personally tested and given two big thumbs up for being long wearing, comfortable to wear in the summer heat, and easy to use so you can spend less time getting ready and more time at the neighborhood cookout. My daily makeup goals for the summer time are to keep it light, long-wearing, easy, and on trend. I find that the following products help me achieve those goals.

First I want to start just like we start when getting ready in the morning… with skin care! A given in the summertime and important all year is SUNSCREEN. For me having more sensitive skin and simply not loving that oily sunscreen feel I have two favorites. First is Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Moisturizer SPF 30, I like this because it is a broad spectrum sunscreen made specifically to be used on the face. I don’t think that it feels too heavy or greasy, and my dry skin feels soft and moisturized afterwards.

Kiehl’s Ulta Facial Moisturizer SPF 30

Another cool sunscreen option is the Jane Iredale Powder-Me SPF. I like this option because it can be used all over the body, is water resistant, and the best feature is that I can dust it over my makeup like a traditional powder. Plus, it has the added bonus of being a chemical free sunscreen which is great for sensitive skin types.

Don’t forget to apply sunscreen to the backs of your hands. Its an area that gets a lot of sun exposure, but that we tend to forget about. We want our hands to continue to be protected and to look just as young as our faces!

Up next is foundation. In the spirit of keeping it easy and light I am going to highlight my two favorite lighter weight foundations/ tinted moisturizers. If you are looking for that glowy skin finish Chanel’s Vitalumiere Aqua is perfect! This oil-free, natural foundation is easy to blend. Its great for simply enhancing your skin, and emphasizing that summer glow. However, if glowing is not your thing I also highly recommend Nars new Velvet Matte Skin Tint. It gives a soft focus finish with a little more coverage than the Vitalumiere Aqua, and works well with oily skin types, or for a evening look with a lighter feel.

Tip: if you can’t live without your favorite highlighter, try pairing it with a more matte foundation. The contrast will help the highlight stand out and give you more of a beach goddess glow!

Finally, let’s talk color. This year it is all about staying fresh, natural, and soft. Usually when the season switches over I tend to trade my powders for creams. They are easy, long wearing and blend into the skin flawlessly. Bobbi Brown has a great selection of cream shadows. You can blend them for a full eye look or simply take your favorite light neutral shade, like Sandy Gold, and sweep is across the lid for a little color and shimmer.

bb_smoosh_e3xw04_80x80_0bb_smoosh_e3xw25_80x80_0Also, colors like Slate are perfect for a quick smokey eye. Concentrate the pigment close to the lid and blend towards the brow, keeping it lighter and softer as you work your way up.

And to flawlessly fake that sun kissed look don’t forget about your cream bronzer and blush. When choosing a cream blush shade you ideally want something that mimics your natural flush, so don’t shy away from the more vibrant tones. When pigment is all packed together in
a cream stick or pot it tends to look more intense than when gently blended onto the skin. The Multiples from Nars are some of my favorites. I love the ease of the stick, and the
formulas are very blendable. No more worrying that it will give you clown cheeks!

0607845015116
For a flawless flush try using your fingers to apply on the apples of the cheeks and then blend upwards, following the cheek bone with a soft blush. The warmth of your fingers helps to manipulate the product and the fluffy brush to softly disperse it.

I hope that some of these suggestions encourage you to play around and get a little more creative with your simple summer look. Also, if you are looking for more ways to wear your summer products or have any questions on other products that might work best for you we are always available for individual classes. You can come to our studio or we can meet you and your friends on location for a fun how-to class.  We always encourage you to try new things, be creative, and find what works best for you.

Enjoy your summer!

XoXo,
Caroline

All of us were greeted by Brandy Lester, an event planner at Mint Springs Farm. I loved getting the chance to walk around this lovely venue and see not only the ceremony area but their bridal suite.

Real MYD Wedding: Carla & Kevin | Charleston, SC

Charleston-Wedding-07

At Makeup for Your Day we love to travel! So, when one of our brides says she is planning to get married in one of our favorite cities of all time we jump at the opportunity!

We all know Charleston, SC as one of the premiere destination wedding sites of the South, and Carla and Kevin’s wedding proves exactly why. The combination of a beautiful beach, amazing architecture, and of course the abundance of culture makes the perfect backdrop to your perfect day!

Charleston-Wedding-11

For this bride the opportunity to walk with her father down this picturesque dock on her way to her groom made for amazing memories captured by her photographer, and cherished by husband and wife forever.Charleston-Wedding-20

Their intimate ceremony was followed by the quintessential romantic carriage ride through  the streets of Charleston.

Carla’s wedding day style is classic and chic. Going with a glamorous soft makeup look paired with soft curls makes Carla the perfect example of a Southern bride.

Popular with today’s bride is the half up half down style. It allows for elegance and romance, sophistication and comfort, and for Carla works amazing with the dimension in her hair and the neckline of her dress.

It’s important when choosing your look for any occasion to take into account your face shape and bone structure. When adding volume to your crown it creates height and elongates rounder face shapes, whereas adding width to the sides helps to create focus on cheek bones and widen more oval face shapes. Carla’s soft look has created a balance of width and height accentuating her features and drawing attention to the off-shoulder silhouette of her dress and features her decolletage.

Even with all this style talk this couple really knows how to let their hair down! Their reception was held at Fish, one of Charleston’s top seafood restaurants located in a historic 1830’s home. Talk about history!

To Carla and Kevin, congratulations from the Makeup for Your Day crew, thank you for showing us how romantic a destination wedding, especially in Charleston can be.

3…2…1… Nashville!

Hi MYD fans! Caroline Lucas here, reporting from Nashville, TN. I know you have been waiting on pins and needles wondering what we would be revealing this week and here it finally is! Makeup for Your Day is expanding to Music City!

Starting in Raleigh, NC and traveling all over for destination weddings we felt like it was time to branch out and explore new territory, and what better fit for our artists than the city that is known for its talent?

At Makeup for Your Day we are always looking for new inspiration, and even though I have only been living in Nashville for a short period, let me tell you, this city is full of it! From festivals and concerts, river views to mountain tops, not to mention all the great food, and growing neighborhoods – Nashville has it all.

So lucky me… I got the opportunity to use this Nashville launch post as an excuse to play tourist in my own city! Come along with me as we scratch the tip of the iceberg on this fun-filled city.

Like most things, to get started, first we need COFFEE! Okay so this might not count as a tourist moment… but can you blame a girl?

Barista Parlor is located in one of my favorite neighborhoods known as East Nashville. A little hip, trendy, and up and coming East Nashville is the place to find awesome food, craft cocktails, and off the charts coffee.

This, my friends, is a whiskey caramel latte and get a load of the DOUGHNUTS! One of each please!….*someone rolls me to my car.  Looking at this all I can think is, “Where can I find a lipstick the shade of that pink glaze”? Talk about the perfect “subtle with a pop” color!  That, my friends, is on our #mydbeauty to-do list!

Alright, alright, now that we’re nice and awake let’s keep it moving. Next stop… The Grand Ole Opry! This place is enormous. It was a beautiful day and good thing because you could walk for days and not experience this whole space.

My brain kept heading straight to all the amazing event spaces. The bridal photo opportunities were endless, and every where you turned was another great piece of Tennessee history. I cannot wait for this to be a regular spot for us. Seeing our artistry on a beautiful Opry bride seems like a dream come true!

Of course, the trip wouldn’t be complete without heading out to Broadway…Nashville’s self-proclaimed “Honky Tonk Highway.” Downtown Nashville is always on. Walking down the street you can hear the talent streaming out of the famous bars like, Robert’s and Tootsies.

medsq_3891884567_28f0f60105.jpg

At Makeup for Your Day, we are known for all the work we do with our amazing brides, but we also do a lot with commercial shoots and head shots, and in a city like Nashville I have a feeling that is going to keep us pretty busy.

Doing hair and makeup meant for lights and stage can be a whole different animal – which is why we make sure to train all our artists and hair stylists on the varying components for each situation. We also make sure that we carry the best products for every situation.

Unlike a lot of people who migrate to Music City, I’m not looking to have my name put up in lights… but I sure am looking forward to seeing the names and faces of our clients up there!

So this concludes the first leg of our Nashville tour. But don’t you worry, there is a lot more where this came from. Our blog, Instagram, and Facebook are going to be filled with bridal inspiration, hair and makeup trends, and our travels from Nashville, Raleigh, the beautiful NC Crystal Coast and Outer Banks, and destinations worldwide! So stay tuned and keep an eye out on all the exciting things Makeup for Your Day will be up to.

We’d love your support in our new endeavor! If you have friends, family or colleagues in the Nashville or surrounding areas that you feel would love our luxury services, please pass our info along and make sure they let us know who sent them! And if there is something you would like to see or a place in Nashville that you find inspiration please leave a comment below. We can’t wait to hear from you!

Thanks again, and we will see you soon!

xoxo,

Caroline and the MYD Beauty Team!
