Cosmetics that are Inspired By India

Inspiration from India has become increasingly popular in the fashion and cosmetic industry. The bright and lively scents and colors of the country have inspired perfumes, hair products and makeup lines.

For example, companies like Aveda has a hair line of Ayurvedic products. This is an ancient medicinal system that uses herbs and natural ingredients that Aveda has adopted into some of their hair products.

Clarins had a summer collection of cosmetics called Enchanted. This line was inspired by Holi, a Hindu festival of colors. This line includes lip glosses with names like Pink Jaipur and Nude Delhi and Henna-like patterns on the packaging.

Chanel also launched an Indian-inspired makeup line called Bombay Express which featured less of the vibrant colors, and had a line filled with pearlescent gold shades.

Some perfumes that have been made to encapsulate the exotic aromas of India included.

Un Jardin après la Mousson, by Hermès was inspired by Kerala after the annual monsoon, this perfume has a compelling scent derived from vetiver, cardamom, pepper, and lime.

Incense Jaisalmer, by Comme des Garçons Parfums is a frankincense-heavy fragrance evokes the medinas of Persia, once linked by camel caravans to the sandstone city of Jaisalmer in Rajasthan.

Escale à Pondichéry, by Dior celebrates Puducherry’s culture as a historic French trading enclave on India’s Tamil Nadu coast, this scent combines locally grown black tea, cardamom, and sandalwood.

Sandalwood Cologne, by Caswell-Massey  is a perfume redolent of the duskily aromatic, woodsy scent of the oil of the rare East Indian sandalwood tree—prized in India for its aphrodisiacal qualities.

My Indian Childhood, DS & Durga is a  sensuously heady perfume is a quintessentially Indian blend of patchouli, jasmine, and tobacco.

Jen + Jen of MYD take NYC!

From April 14-16, New York City is hosting The International Beauty Show. The Big Apple is no newcomer to the cosmetic scene. In fact, New York City is home to many of the big brands such as Estee Lauder and Tarte Cosmetics.

MYD’s Jen B and Jen H decided to visit NYC to scope the products, celebrities and other artists at this year’s International Beauty Show. The Jens attended an OCC makeup party and even spotted Pamela Anderson!

We will give you the full details of the trip, plus photos when they return. Until then, be sure to check out our Facebook page for the Instagram photo updates!

MYD Spends A Week Giving Thanks!

Welcome to Makeup for Your Day’s Thanksgiving countdown, where we will have daily posts to let you know what we are thankful for!

Today we are thankful for artistry and design. We are so lucky to be in such a creative field where boundaries are constantly being tested and redefined. There are so many innovative new products and techniques that are so incredible, it keeps us constantly on our feet and excited about what will come next.
One such innovative product that we are thankful for is our Kett Airbrush Machine! For those of you who haven’t read our blog before, check out our rave review of the Kett Airbrush Machine and why it is amazing for brides here, and check out our amazing and extensive staff training day blog post here. Any product that gives us the ability to make our clients look completely flawless we are definitely thankful for!
Other makeup products that we are thankful for are lip stains. When it is done right (not drying or flakey with good color payoff and the ability to last for hours) they are amazing products. When they aren’t done well it is a huge disappointment.  This is why we are thankful for the Chanel Lip Stains. These are truly heaven-sent to make sure that everyone can have beautifully colored and moisturized lips!
Another makeup innovation that we are thankful for is eyelash extensions. From enhancing your natural lashes, to a darker, thicker and more defined lash look – the possibilities are endless. Click here to read more about the training, procedure and payoff of amazing eyelash extensions. We love that they can last 4-5 weeks. Beach vacation, holiday party, get togethers, weddings… you name it, they are perfect for that little extra something. Plus, not having to apply mascara in the morning does lend more time for beauty sleep with the added bonus of waking up and looking incredible!
We can’t forget the hair products that we are thankful for! We love Kenra hair products. One of the best products is their Volume Hairspray. It is the 8-time winner for Best Hairspray at the Stylist Choice Awards, including 2012. You cannot go wrong with this hairspray!

We are also thankful for Biolage products because they cater to a diverse range of hair issues and are top quality products. They have great products for colored hair, dry hair, dull hair and they also have a line specifically for scalp care. Whatever hair need you have, Biolage will have a product that will help.

Our last product that we are thankful for today is a hair tool. Marcel curling irons are amazing. They come in a variety of barrel sizes and create the perfect curl! Curls will never go out of style. They are a completely feminine and sexy look perfect for all hair types and lengths.

Stay tuned for our daily Thanksgiving posts this week where you will get more product recommendations and some info on our talented team of artists and stylists!

Review of Maybelline Foundation and Mousse Blush and the Covergirl Lip Stain

So I tried the Maybelline foundation and it actually works very well! I mean, it’s not Chanel, Bobbi or even MAC for that matter…but it’ll do the trick if you’re looking to spend less and still get a quality foundation.

The Mousse Blush was alright. It looks great initially when you put it on but I found that the first day I wore it, it blended down so much that within a few hours I had no color. The next day I layered the mousse with a powder blush over top and it lasted my whole work day. It was a great color, too!

The lips left a little more to be desired. I used the pen which is the stain but it felt really dry coming out. It also turned a lot darker on the lips after it sat for the 2 minutes recommended. I layered the gloss over top and that toned it down a bit but I still found that it came off when I ate. It’s nice for work because I only have to touch up the gloss every now and then but if you want something that REALLY stays all day…this isn’t it.

I hope some of you found that helpful! I’ll keep dabbling on my Wal-mart and Target escapades (because it’s so much fun) and let y’all know what else I find out there!

The Look for Less!

In this state of economic decline I thought, hey, why don’t we try some cheaper products and compare them to the high-end departments store cosmetics we’re used to? I went shopping this weekend with my family (got to see one of my nephews and nieces, too!) and picked up the Maybelline Dream Mousse Foundation I have been seeing advertised on TV so much. I haven’t tried it yet, will do that tomorrow –this weekend was a total NO MAKEUP weekend, if you can believe that — and am definitely looking forward to it. The foundation was only $7!!! Whoa! That’s compared to my $50 something Chanel and $40 something Bobbi Brown. I hope it works out. My wallet does, too! Here’s what the website says about the foundation:

Why You’ll Love It

Liquid-mousse texture
Air-whipped formula provides skin perfecting coverage.

  • Smooth, 100% poreless finish with natural luminosity
  • Air-brushed natural perfection
  • Blends effortlessly for a flawless, air-brushed finish.
  • Oil-free, Fragrance-free, Dermatologist Tested, Allergy Tested, Non-comedogenic – won’t clog pores.
  • Safe for sensitive skin, good for all skin types

In addition to the foundation I picked up a Maybelline Mousse Blush and a Cover Girl Outlast Lip Stain with Gloss. The Blush is part of that same “Dream” collection and I’m looking forward to trying out the texture since it, too is oil-free but will most likely work great on my surface-area dryness. I’ll let you know! Here are the blush and lip stain/gloss:
For some reason the blog isn’t letting me link to the respective websites that I am talking about so you can find these products at: http://www.maybelline.com and http://www.covergirl.com.

Quick Makeup Tips for Those on the Go!

I don’t know about you, but I’ve been SUPER busy lately! With work, going back to school (for my master’s…yikes!), planning get-togethers with my friends/family (one of my New Year’s Goals because I don’t make resolutions, those get broken), etc. I have been up too late and dragging in the a.m. In order to not look like a total fruit cake at work, I have to manage to throw something on my face and work at the tired look….it’s not in style…ever. So, here are a few of my favorite quick-fix products for those mornings when I don’t have time to do a full face but want it “work ready”:

1. Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer: from the website, “Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer is a sheer, lightweight moisturizer with SPF 20 & a hint of color that can be used in place of foundation for a natural appearance while adding a healthy glow to your complexion.”

2. Chanel Professional Eye Shadow Base: (optional-only if there’s time) This is awesome with or without shadow over top. It really helps to neutralize the darkness that actually can come through on the lid of the eye like concealer does for under.

3. Bobbi Brown Corrector and Concealer: My all-around MUST HAVE, EVERYDAY. No questions about this one ladies! With or without a sleepless night, Bobbi concealer is something every woman should have in her makeup bag!

4. Smashbox Blush: A pop of color right on the apples of the cheeks really brightens the face. It’s an instant pick-me-up.

5. Rosebud Salve: This is the most fantastic lip balm in the world! I like the Strawberry flavor, too. I use this at night before bed and in the morning while I’m getting ready to give my lips some conditioning and a light hint of pink.

6. Dior Diorshow Iconic Mascara: Love, love, love this mascara. I love how it really gets the job done by itself or you can add Chanel’s Exceptionnel Mascara to get a bigger bang (when you aren’t running late and can spend time on 2 mascaras)!

What are your must-haves for when you’re running late? Are there things you just can’t go without? Tell us about them!

Best Buys from Allure

I just received an e-newsletter from Allure magazine and while most of the info I skim over I found some of the products as “Best Beauty Buys” rather good. We have used a lot of these in the past a few I’m going to grab to try out this week.

I love that they listed the Sublimage eye cream from Chanel as their number 1 splurge since I just blogged about that last week! It’s amazing! Just thought I’d share!

Also, I’m attaching the Allure Beauty tips of the month in case other makeup junkies (like us) out there want to know! Enjoy!

  • If you’ve applied too much mineral foundation, dab a tiny bit of moisturizer on your fingers, press them together, then gently pat—don’t rub—the pads of your fingers on those areas. This will remove the excess without smearing your makeup.

  • When testing a nail color, using a small amount is useless—always brush on two coats so you can see how the finished product will look.

  • If you have fine hair and you want to create waves, apply mousse and let it dry naturally. If your hair is pin-straight, add mousse, then wrap it into a bun while it dries.
