Bust those Morning Blues: How to Properly Conceal Tired Eyes

Are you dealing with dark circles no matter how much sleep you’re getting? Proper concealing is one of the best things that you can do to look awake, well-rested and ready to go! (Even if you’re not!)

In the morning, start with your regular routine of washing and moisturizing your face. Don’t skip the moisturizer! Moisturizing will help the concealer blend into the skin and prevent it from making any dry patches more apparent.

Then apply your foundation as you usually would. After you apply your foundation, you will see what you need to conceal, whether it is blemishes or under eye circles.

To properly conceal, you need to take color theory into consideration. To neutralize the color of your under eye circles, you need to use a colored concealer. Identify what color your dark circles are. Most people have blueish/purple dark circles. This is why there are so many pinky/salmon colored concealers.

Step 1: Neutralize your dark circles by using a color at the opposite side of the color wheel as your dark circles. Don’t rub. The skin around the eyes is really delicate. If you are using your fingers, dab lightly. You can also use a makeup sponge or a brush.

Step 2: After using the corrector you will want to use a yellow-based concealer that will hide what is left of the dark circles. Again, dab lightly or use a sponge or brush.
Step 3: Use a setting powder to set your foundation and concealer.
Deatrice, one of our very talented makeup artists, highly recommends Ben Nye’s translucent face powder.

The best concealers are usually cream based. You want to ensure that it looks natural and sinks into the skin instead of sitting on top of it or settling into lines and making them more noticeable.
Here are some of our concealer recommendations:

If you are willing to spend some money on a quality concealer that will get the job done, we recommend Bobbi Brown’s concealers. The creamy texture works well and the dual colors work wonders to neutralize and conceal dark circles. Another great concealer with the same concept is Laura Mercier’s Secret Camouflage Concealer.

All Shades of Pink for Valentine’s Day

Happy Valentine’s Day everyone! Here is a post dedicated to pretty pinks on this romantic holiday.
Pink has been referred to as the “color of love,” hence its association with Valentine’s Day. It was first recorded as a color in the late 17th Century. Since then we have adopted it with open arms. We love how different shades of pink look feminine, yet sexy for eyes, lips and cheeks!
There are many shades of pink. Fushcias, baby pinks, roses and many more. It is important to understand what kind of pinks look good on your skin tone. Most of the time there will be orange-based pinks and blue-based pinks.
Although it may not be apparent at first, once you study the colors, deciphering whether they are orange-based or blue-based will become easier. For example, coral, cerise and bright pink are all orange-based pinks in the above photo. Fuchsia and cyber pink are both blue-based pinks.
Here is Lady Gaga with a hot pink eye shadow look. Most people follow the rule to only have one bold feature with makeup. If you have bold eyes, do subdued lips – and if you have bold lips, go for more natural eyes. In this look, Lady Gaga has intense (blue-based) hot pink eyes and orangey-red lips – and she pulls it off!

This is a more subtle pink look that would be great for a Valentine’s Day date. The perfectly pink cheeks and subtle hint of pink on the brow bone keeps her face fresh and youthful. We also love the lashes. This look is romantic, feminine and beautiful!

To make pink a workable shade for your eyes, you have to be sure you pick the right hue. Here, the makeup artist has pick a very blue-based, almost purple pink eye shadow to compliment the model’s eyes. We think that this looks beautiful for the runway, but is not a very wearable daytime look.

We think this model is absolutely stunning! Her red hair is to die for and we love her rosy cheeks and pinky lips. This is a great date night look for Valentine’s Day!

A smokey pink-red eye? How could we not love it! Although we think this is more meant for the runways and magazines instead of date night or real life, we think this smokey pink-red eye looks smouldering and incredible!

Here is another date-night-worthy look for Valentine’s Day. Clean skin, amazing lashes and bold pink lips look strong, feminine and sexy. This is definitely a go-to look for date night!

Want to play with pink, but you’re not sure where to start? We love palettes. Any opportunity to play with a variety of colors to see what works, what doesn’t, what we love and what we don’t love as much – we will take it! The below MAC lip palette is a great way to experiment with pink lips. Some of these colors you might not buy in an individual lipstick tube, but with this palette you will get the opportunity to experiment.

What are your Valentine’s Day date traditions? Dinner and a movie? A picnic? Let us know what you love to do and what makeup looks you want to try this Valentine’s Day!

Lauren + Chase’s Winter Wedding

With the holidays over and a few weeks into the new year, it is time to cozy up until the warmer weather returns. One of the best ways to cozy up is with someone you love – and that is exactly what Lauren and Chase did!

The wedding was planned by Southern Soiree and photographed by Brian Mullins Photography. Beth and Marcie from Makeup For Your Day were there to make sure that Lauren and her bridal party were all looking beautiful for the big day.

Lauren had an amazing, classic look. Her curled, low hairstyle looked great with her veil. And her makeup made her look flawless and fresh-faced. She was such a stunning winter bride and they are such a beautiful couple.

Are you engaged? Are you planning a winter wedding? Here are some of our favorite fashionable coverups for the colder weather!

Thank you to Lauren and Chase for letting us be a part of your big day! To see photos of other weddings that we have been a part of, check out our Facebook page. To stay up-to-date about when new blogs are posted, follow us on Twitter!

Skin and Hair Resolutions for 2013!

It’s 2013! A new year means new goals and resolutions. Here are some resolutions that we have for our skincare and haircare routine this year.
Apply Sunscreen Everyday.

Sunscreen, year round, inside or out should become a habit in your skincare routine. Be sure that you include broad-spectrum sunscreen that will protect your skin from UVA and UVB rays. Wearing sunscreen helps the overall appearance of skin, prevents dark spots, dryness and premature aging in the form of wrinkles.

Exfoliate (at least) Once a Week.

We are putting our best faces forward this year by not neglecting this task in our skincare regiment. Exfoliating gets rid of the dead cells on the skin’s surface and helps prevent pores from becoming clogged. It always helps skin look and feel great.

Remove all Makeup Before Bed.

Everyone does it. Late nights happen and going to bed immediately seems better than going through your evening skincare routine. No matter how tired you are, wash your face and remove your makeup. When makeup sits on your skin all night it can clog your pores and cause breakouts.

Wash Your Makeup Brushes Regularly.

Breakouts can be really frustrating. People will change their diet and switch up their skincare routine, but that may not be the problem. Makeup brushes house all kind of bacteria, and if you don’t clean them, then you are spreading this bacteria from the brush, to the makeup, to your skin. If you can, try to clean your makeup brushes weekly.

Use a heat protectant before styling.

Every time you reach for the blow dryer, hair straightener or curling iron, use a heat protectant first. Consistently heating hair follicles can cause breakage and split ends. Luckily there are no shortage of products on the market that can help protect your hair from suffering extensive heat damage.

Sleep More.

This seems like an easy resolution to make and keep, but with the work demands and social engagements, sometimes the sleep gets neglected to keep up with how busy life can get. Sleep allows the body, and your skin, to restore and repair itself. Lack of sleep reduces the skin’s ability to retain moisture. Lack of sleep also raises the stress hormone in the body which can lead to breakouts and accelerated aging.

 Drink More Water.

This is a great resolution and it isn’t just for better skin. Drinking more water does help flush toxins and improves the skin’s appearance while minimizing breakouts, but drinking water is also linked to many other health benefits. Benefits such as improved cognitive performance, better digestion and the prevention of many diseases is linked to hydration as well – so drink up!

Throw out old makeup.

Makeup collections tend to grow, but they don’t shrink unless one product is completely used up. Makeup products are susceptible to all sorts of bacteria, so it is important to keep track of how long you have had your products. A good rule of thumb would be to go through your makeup twice a year, if you haven’t used up your liquid or gel-based product (especially mascara and liquid foundation) in that time, then get rid of it.

MYD’s Head-to-Toe Inspiration for New Years

Happy New Years!

Here are some party looks that you can try tonight to bring in the new year. Whether you are going out or staying in, bring in the new year with a bang!

Try this with the eyes:

Try this new spin on the classic cat eyeliner. Start with a regular cat eye, then bring the liner into the crease of your eye in a reverse triangle. Tip: Be sure to use primer first to prevent the eyeliner from creasing or smudging.

Try these cheeks:

It’s nighttime, it’s colder than usual. Take advantage of this by layering your blush. You don’t want to reach clown status, but by making it a little bolder and darker than your usual daytime look. This will give your makeup the perfect glowing, fresh-faced, evening-look.

Try these lips:

Mix things up. There is no better way to bring in the new year with a bang than to wow people with tangerine lips. These colors are usually associated with the summer months, but we say – go for it. They look great regardless.

Try this face:

We love this structured and defined face that is still very soft and feminine. It looks very clean and matte – pop on some false lashes or a bold lip color and you are good to go!

Try this hairstyle:

This is a very textured and piecey updo. We love the gold star hairpiece, it is a great addition to this undone look. To accomplish this, use some texturizing spray. Bring your hair into an updo and then slowly start pulling small pieces out (tease if necessary) and spray with hairspray. It is a great New Years party hairstyle.

Try this nail art:

Nail art has exploded this year. It has been featured in magazines, it is sweeping Twitter, is rampant in the blogsphere and can be found on the fingers of many people. We love these firework fingernails! They are creative and look great, and only really acceptable tonight or the 4th of July, so we say go for it!

Try this outfit:

Black pants with a sequin silver bustier tucked in and a structured blazer is an amazing look to rock this New Years Eve. It is dressy, but also hip and fun. The sequins feel festive as new years is associated with glitter and fireworks. This outfit can be very versatile too, worn with a black skirt or different sweater/ blazer combo and it would still look great!

 Try this accessory:

This was a great year for clutches. They came in a wide variety of colors, shapes, sizes and patterns. It is the perfect accessory for any outfit. We love how it is practical, holding gloss, mini hairspray and anything else we might need on the go – but it still a great fashion piece!

2012 is over, 2013 is on the horizon and it is going to be a good year. We hope that you found inspiration in some of these elements. What look will you try tonight? Let us know via Twitter, Facebook or in the comment box below!

Hair Play: Inspiration for the Holidays

The holidays can get busy, and sometimes it is hard to think about a great hairstyle that you can try out at a party or a get together. Here is some hair inspiration for the holidays!
Kate Beckinsale looks gorgeous with her curly ponytail. First, curl the ends of your hair and spray it with hairspray. Then, tease your hair at your crown and pull it back and secure it with bobby pins. Then take the rest of your hair and put it into a high ponytail. Add some great earrings and you are good to go!

We love this low-key, but unique look that Thandie Newton is wearing. It is a great way to make a plain side-braid really fun. With the holidays, there is no shortage of festive ribbon laying around. Why not make use of it in your next hairstyle? Festive ribbon would also look great in any hairstyle that requires a hair elastic  such as a high or low ponytail  even a bun. First secure the hair with a regular elastic, then add the ribbon!

Emily Blunt looks absolutely stunning here. She turned a regular low bun into a statement hairstyle by adding a feathery embellishment. This works well with her deep part and looks amazing with her hair color and eye color. Why not make a statement with your hairstyle? There are plenty pieces available for purchase in stores, such as a beaded headband, glittery hairpins or gemstone clips.
If you have short hair, or just short bangs and would like to pin them back, take a note from Kiera Knightley. Her short hair has been taken in small section and twisted and then pinned back. The burgundy textured headband looks great with this messy, undone look. This is a really great holiday hairstyle.
To pull off a great hairstyle you need great products. Here are some recommendations from talented members of our team!

One of our stylists, Kristin, absolutely loves 12 Benefits Blow Dry Spray. She explains, “it has 12 benefits! But my favorite things about it is that it repairs damaged hair, it’s a heat protectant and it speeds up blow dry time by 50 percent.”

Hair Designer, ElizaBeth, says she never leaves her house without Big Sexy Hair hairspray and Kathy, a stylist and cosmetologist on our team, names it as one of the big three products that she is thankful for.

Is the thought of the holidays giving you some stress? Tune in tomorrow as day 7 in our countdown will give you some at-home stress busters.
