St. Patrick’s Day Inspiration!

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

We’ve got two looks to inspire you today whether you are going downtown or just having some green cupcakes at work. These two looks should help to keep you from getting pinched!

Our talented artist, Valentina face charted this look and it is perfect for work or a daytime event. Who doesn’t love a good green eyeliner?

I love how the different green hues transition into each other! This look is actually easier to achieve than you might think. To create the ombre wing effect I simply used an angled brush that I sprayed with a spritz of water to intensify the green pigment. I laid the light color down first and then slightly overlapped with the darker green to create a transition effect. I then added an even darker color green just on the wing to create  a small amount of depth. Top it off with your favorite mascara and you are ready to go!

The next look Valentina created is a sultry green and gold look. This would look amazing for an evening out!

IMG_20160317_075730_01

This look has a lot of layers. I first started with a “transition shade” that was slightly darker than my skintone throughout the crease. I then packed in some of the darker pigment do the outer corner of my lid. I then patted on the matte green shade on my lid, then popped some gold shimmer pigment on top! I finished the look with a bold black liner. For a more intense look you could pop some of the green pigment on your lower lash line as well. Top this with your favorite set of falsies and enjoy some green beverages!

Megan and I had so much fun chatting with brides and their fiances about their upcoming wedding plans! We met guests who were just recently engaged and some that were just putting the finishing touches on their events.

Bridal shows are a great way to get to chat with vendors and see venues fully decorated. If you find yourself at a bridal show in the future, please make sure you stop by and chat with us! My favorite part of it all is meeting couples and sharing in the excitement of planning a wedding and getting to know them.

That wraps up our bridal shows before we enter this 2016 wedding season. We’ve got a lot of work to do catching up with all the brides we met at the shows this season! See you at the next show!

Bridal Show Month: The Wed Tour

February is Bridal Show Month and I am documenting all of the shows Makeup for Your Day attended! This time we were on The Wed Tour of Raleigh.

This was a fun event because guests took a trolley between several different venues where different vendors were set up.

Makeup for Your Day was set up at the Merrimon Wynne! This is one of my favorite venues in Raleigh just because the bridal suite is so gorgeous!

I was in love with the paper crane display cascading from the center of the house! The entire Merrimon Wynne was glammed out with splashes of navy, gold and fuschia.

I spy our spread in Trendy Bride magazine which was shot at the Merrimon Wynne!

This was a very intimate event with only a handful of vendors at each venue. We had the honor of sharing space with vendors like Perry Vaile, Donovan’s Dish, Erin McLean Events and Bunn DJ company!

I will continue to document the bridal shows we attended in February on the blog! Catch us tomorrow to see where Megan and I ended up next!

Bridal Show Month: Museum of Life and Science

February is Bridal Show Month at Makeup for Your Day and I will be documenting all of the shows we went to! Megan and I were back in Durham again for a bridal show at the Museum of Life and Science.

I think that this venue brought out the inner child in me. We were set up in the weather room and I don’t know how many vendors can say they could chat with brides next to a tornado!

The museum set up this gorgeous alter.

Our models for this event were actually employees at the museum and were such a treat to chat with. They talked about how great it was to work for the museum!

There was live music, food trucks and live animals, all of which could be brought out at an event. I met a lizard and a snake at the bridal show! How cool is that!?

Monica, an employee of the museum, played the role of the “bride” perfectly!

I also got to try some honey lavender ice cream from The Parlour ice cream bus! It was so delicious! Also, who doesn’t love running up to the ice cream truck for a sweet treat!

Megan and I got to chat with some great brides who had come to the museum. Some were already planning on having their wedding there, others were getting a feel for the place. I am sure after this fun night, the choice would be easy!

Bridal Show Month: The Rickhouse

February is Bridal Show Month at Makeup for Your Day and I will be documenting all of the shows we attended! We were invited to be a vendor at The Rickhouse in Durham. This show was fun because it was on Valentine’s day, so it seemed extra romantic.

IMG_20160214_113927

I really like this venue because it carries so much charm and history. We had a great view of the brewery! Megan and I came out for this show and we got to chat with some great vendors and meet some of the fun brides-to-be!

IMG_20160214_152552

We had our flowers provided for this show by Tre Bella and they were so gorgeous! I love the way they looked next to the brick background.

We had a great view of the big dance floor that The Rickhouse has. I feel like Durham brings out the unique creativity in people! At this event I got to meet Riley Mclean and see his tin types! What a cool way to take a portrait!

I will be documenting the rest of our February bridal shows this week! Tune in tomorrow to see where we went next!

Caroline, Abbey, Megan and I started our day by making over our two gorgeous models.

I had so much fun at this show because we come to the Carolina Inn several times a year for weddings, and it was great to see the place totally decked out. Several of our artists & stylists were able to come to the event to meet all of the brides that came out to the show.

Members of our team with Heidi!

We even got to hang out with Heidi Dawson, the director of catering for the Carolina Inn and a good friend of the Makeup for Your Day team. One of our resident stylists, Megan is getting married this year and was able to attend the show with her fiance, Anthony!

One of my favorite parts of bridal shows is the food! I don’t know that I have seen so many different food vendors in one place before! We had cake, pie, chicken and waffles on a stick, and there was even a s’mores bar. Yes.. a buffet where you could make your own s’mores. YUM! Jen and Susanne had to grab a cheerwine and donuts!

unnamed (7)
Tasty treats were available all over The Carolina Inn!

I will documenting all of the bridal shows Megan and I went to in the month of February on the blog over the next few days! Please tune in tomorrow for more!

See you at the next show!

Transition your Summer Beauty Routine into Fall Fabulous

As Labor day has come and gone and people are settling back into school, work and a fall routine everything can seem overwhelming compared to the slow-paced summer. Here are 5 tips to quickly transition your summer makeup into flawless fall looks, as seen on the runway!

Getting Skintimate

Dewy is out for fall. And so is flat-looking overly matte skin. Instead, there have been a number of products that have surfaced that provide great coverage, but still let your natural skin show through. Instead of looking too dewy, or too matte, these formulas provide the perfect balance.

Crimson Hues

That’s right cranberry, rust and crimson hues are in for this fall. These colors are definitely easier to incorporate with your fall lip colors, but it is absolutely stunning when used on the eyes! Red eyeshadow may be intimidating, but try dabbing a small amount in the middle of your eyelid, or blend well into the crease leaving everything else neutral.

No More Neutrals

The nudes, corals, pretty pinks and french manis are out! Three hot nails shades this fall include purple-greys, deep navys and greyish greens. We love the trend of earthy grey tones that are gracing the shelves for fall.

Sheer Pops

We love the deep hues of fall lips. The plums, maroons and deep shades are extremely sexy and feminine. This fall we are seeing a lot of sheer shades. Instead of full color, there are so many pigmented stains and sheer glosses hitting the market.

From Fruity to Full

A great way to transition from summer into fall is to change up your scent. Swap out our citrus and floral scents for deep, woody scents. The cooler it gets, the warmer the scent – it’s a great way to get settled into the swing of fall.

What do you change in your beauty routine between summer and fall?  Let us know in the comments box below!

MYD Bride Jessica’s Beautiful Wedding Day Look

It was such a pleasure to be a part of Jason and Jessica’s special day! Makeup up For Your Day had three talented members of our team there to help the ladies get ready. Jennifer B was there to apply beautiful, flawless airbrush makeup and Kathy and Kerri were there to do gorgeous hairstyles for all of the ladies.

Beautiful bride Jessica and eight of the bridal party and mothers got ready at The Washington Duke Inn. From there, Tia from Erin McLean Events, coordinated the travel to The Duke Chapel for an amazing ceremony – and then they were on to The Fearrington for an incredible reception.

Weddings are the best day of a bride and groom’s life, and they are also long! Even though the day is long, the bride and groom still wish it would last forever. The same goes for your hair and makeup! You want your hair and makeup to last through the tears, the toasts, the dancing and everything else. This is why we absolutely love airbrush makeup and always suggest it to our brides.

Airbrush makeup will not fade, transfer or smudge throughout the day. It is waterproof, sweatproof and looks completely natural. Jessica looked beautiful from the start of the day until the end of the day. She was such a gorgeous bride! Thank you to Jessica and Jason for letting us be a part of your special day!

Have you ever tried, or thought of trying airbrush makeup? Let us know in the comments box below! To see more brides with beautiful airbrush makeup, check out our Facebook page!

Bust those Morning Blues: How to Properly Conceal Tired Eyes

Are you dealing with dark circles no matter how much sleep you’re getting? Proper concealing is one of the best things that you can do to look awake, well-rested and ready to go! (Even if you’re not!)

In the morning, start with your regular routine of washing and moisturizing your face. Don’t skip the moisturizer! Moisturizing will help the concealer blend into the skin and prevent it from making any dry patches more apparent.

Then apply your foundation as you usually would. After you apply your foundation, you will see what you need to conceal, whether it is blemishes or under eye circles.

To properly conceal, you need to take color theory into consideration. To neutralize the color of your under eye circles, you need to use a colored concealer. Identify what color your dark circles are. Most people have blueish/purple dark circles. This is why there are so many pinky/salmon colored concealers.

Step 1: Neutralize your dark circles by using a color at the opposite side of the color wheel as your dark circles. Don’t rub. The skin around the eyes is really delicate. If you are using your fingers, dab lightly. You can also use a makeup sponge or a brush.

Step 2: After using the corrector you will want to use a yellow-based concealer that will hide what is left of the dark circles. Again, dab lightly or use a sponge or brush.
Step 3: Use a setting powder to set your foundation and concealer.
Deatrice, one of our very talented makeup artists, highly recommends Ben Nye’s translucent face powder.

The best concealers are usually cream based. You want to ensure that it looks natural and sinks into the skin instead of sitting on top of it or settling into lines and making them more noticeable.
Here are some of our concealer recommendations:

If you are willing to spend some money on a quality concealer that will get the job done, we recommend Bobbi Brown’s concealers. The creamy texture works well and the dual colors work wonders to neutralize and conceal dark circles. Another great concealer with the same concept is Laura Mercier’s Secret Camouflage Concealer.

Hits and Misses: The Best and Worst looks of the VMAs

We’ve had time to digest the good, the bad and the completely terrible looks from the VMAs this past weekend. Here are some of the most memorable looks.
Selena Gomez looked beautiful with long, straight hair and berry lips. We think this look is classic, simple and feminine.
Katy Perry, known for taking risks with her fashion and beauty was a miss for us. As much as we love a high pony, it was a little bit over the top with the cheetah turtleneck dress and the grills. Her eyelashes and eyebrows do look fabulous as always though!
Actress Allison Williams wowed us at the VMAs. Although the focus falls to the music performers, we thought she shone bright on the red carpet with her smokey eyes and messy, volumized updo.
Canadian model Coco Rocha looked stunning with her signature red hair in a gelled “punk” do with some smokey eyes. She looked rocker chic and we loved it!
Rita Ora had us looking twice. Ever since Beyonce debuted a shorter hairstyle, we thought that this was her! The glamorous outfit is very Beyonce-esque. Even though it isn’t Beyonce, we still love Rita’s blunt bob, defined brows and nude pink lips.
Miley Cyrus was a huge miss at the VMAs – from the red carpet, to the performances. It was a disaster. As much as we love her matte red lips and brows, her hair, outfits and mannerisms were too distracting. We give her two thumbs down!

We like Taylor Swift’s retro-glam look. She is known for her red lips and her sultry eyes, but what we are loving is her pinned curls. Overall we love everything about this look – good job Taylor!

What were your hits and misses from the VMAs? We would love to know! Let us know via Facebook, Twitter or the comments box below!
