NACE: Styled Shoot Competition

There is nothing like a little competition to get the creative mind going! This month I was fortunate enough to attend a National Association of Catering and Events’ (NACE) meeting. Each meeting has a different subject and theme, however this specific event was designed to talk about PR Strategy and how to utilize styled shoots for your creative business.  A styled shoot is how vendors are able to collaborate together to market and showcase their services. These styled shoots often end up on blogs, in print and on marketing literature.

What better way to show what these vendors learned by throwing them right into a competition! The groups were split into three teams that were asked to choose from several different elements and create a themed styled shoot. There were floral arrangements, props, models and outfits for a Bohemian, Romantic and High Fashion look. As a stylist, I had so much fun working with my fellow artists to create these looks with our models. Makeup and hair can truly transform the mood you are looking to create.

The teams all had such different ways of putting together the same concept. Our Romantic model is wearing a soft low chignon with a soft classic bridal look.

It was interesting to note that this team chose the Romantic model for their bohemian look! That floral headpiece really changes the whole feel of this look!

We had so much fun putting together the High Fashion look! Its not everyday you get to break out your green and blue eyeshadows. I believe this look was inspired by a peacock. The models brilliant eyes just wear this look so well!

Her hair needed to compliment this look. She needed height and texture to compliment such a bold look! It paired perfectly with her sequin gown.

The bohemian model was a real treat to put together! Who doesn’t love a tousled curl look with some braids?

This model had the most stunning blue eyes and I think this soft smokey eye just compliments them so well!

We so enjoyed styling the guys for the shoot, as well.  There’s more to male grooming before they get in front of the camera than you think! This winning shoot is featured on the Weddings magazine blog here and we encourage you to hop over and check it out.

Styled shoots are all about putting different elements together to create a cohesive look. Hair and makeup is such a huge part of this as it can affect the overall outcome. You can see more photos and read more about the event on Southern Bride & Grooms blog.

We’d love to hear your thoughts on these shoots and any ideas for upcoming styled shoots we have in the works! MYD Loves Senior Portraits!

Senior portraits are a great opportunity to get photos that you can give to your friends before graduation, and that you can keep forever. Senior portraits are also a great time to have your hair and makeup done professionally to ensure that you look flawless in photos.
At Makeup for Your Day, we partner with photographers to ensure a natural and polished look that captures the unique personality of each senior.
There was an awesome and incredibly talented team working with Samantha Jayne for her senior portraits. Makeup for Your Day’s talented artist and stylist Kristin worked with Samantha Jayne to give her the beautiful and natural look that she wanted. Stephanie Spencer was there to capture her personality throughout the day for the beautiful photos that you see below.
Not only is it a fun experience to be pampered and look and feel great infront of the camera, but it is also so rewarding to have beautiful and timeless photos that you will enjoy forever!

Best Looks from the 2013 Met Gala

The annual MET Gala is always crawling with celebrities in the most incredible designer getups. As much as we love their outfits, we love seeing their hair and makeup even more! This year’s theme was “Punk: From Chaos to Couture.” We were immediately excited to see how grunge/ punk rock these otherwise glamorous celebrities would get for the occasion. Here are some of the most memorable looks of the night.

Miley Cyrus very recently got a nod as the year’s sexiest woman. She showed up in a fishnet dress and 90s punk-rock hair that was bleached with dark roots and very gelled. This 90s look wasn’t great in the 90s and it isn’t great now. While we didn’t love Miley Cyrus’ look for her hair and we think that other celebrities’ interpretations of “punk” looked much better we did enjoy the bold red lip reminiscent of the 90’s Cindy Crawford.
Glam diva Jennifer Lopez showed up looking dewy as always with a really pretty smokey eye. What made her look rock in our books was her faux hawk. It was edgy and cool, but still looks glamorous and wasn’t too over-the-top.

Nicole Richie definitely made you look twice to make sure you were seeing things correctly. Her blonde locks were a grey/lilac color. Her hair was extremely textured and pulled back with lots of volume. Her lips picked up the subtle purple hue in her hair with a wine-colored lipstick. Her eyeliner was kept simple. We also thought her eyebrows looked great. For this occasion, we would give her look an A+. Her dress was also gorgeous.

Kristen Stewart always wears interesting smokey eyes that make her green eyes pop. This night was no different with her burgundy smokey eyes and slicked back hair. We love this look!
Emmy Rossum looked so cool. We love her grey lids with black liner all around and a smudged (but still very neat) brown exaggerated cat eye extending outwards. The focus was definitely on her eyes, but her eyebrows also looked incredible. Once you stop staring at her awesome eye makeup you notice how intricate her braided updo/ topknot is, which is also very cool. We love this!
Minka Kelly looked beautiful with dark, matt lips, defined brows and dewy skin, but what we loved more than that was her hair. We think that this would be a gorgeous wedding hairstyle. We love the braid and the stunning hair piece. Although she didn’t look as punk as some other celebrities, we thought that she looked great!

Cara Delevingne had beautiful smokey eyes and dark, defined brows. We love the black liner around her whole eye with a beautiful grey-brown smokey palette used above and below the eye. The skin and lips were kept simple so that the focus was on the eyes. We also liked how her hair was left down with one side tightly braided and the other side was worn down, straight and textured. We thought that this was a really cool and more wearable “punk” hairstyle.
What do you think of these celebrities and their “punk” looks? We would love to know via the comments box below, through Facebook or Twitter!

MYD is featured on the Wedding Chicks Blog!

We are so excited to share that a photo shoot that we were a part of was recently featured on Wedding Chicks! This wedding blog is ranked top three worldwide, boasting almost 40, 000 Facebook fans and around 50, 000 Twitter followers!

We absolutely loved being a part of this shoot. We were able to work within the vintage theme and created the most beautiful curls and red lips. The retro pin curls, pink cheeks and red lips look amazing in the photos and give off a romantic, retro vibe that we love!

We were so excited to work with such an incredible team on this shoot, including Live View Studios, Ruche, Uncommon Gatherings Vintage, Linacucina LLC and Embellished Blooms

MYD Beautifies the Tre Bella Styled Shoot

We are so excited to share these beautiful photos {courtesy of Robin Lin Photography} that Tre Bella used as their advertisements in Weddings Unveiled Magazine and Southern Bride and Groom Magazine. Our talented artist and stylist Jen B did airbrush makeup on both of the models and gave them both beautiful bridal hairstyles.

This is such a stunning bridal look. The model features clean, matte skin with subtle pink cheeks and natural lips. Jen B did such an amazing job with her hair as well, this is such a beautiful bridal hairstyle. If you like what you see, don’t forget to PIN it!
The models looked incredible in dresses from Tre Bella Bridal with flowers by Tre Bella Florist

MYD Partakes in a Beautiful Farm and Factory Styled Shoot

At Makeup for Your Day we absolutely love being a part of photo shoots. It is fun to have the opportunity to collaborate on the looks and the styling and to create something new and original. With this shoot we wanted to have 40’s-inspired hair and makeup. Artist and stylist Jen B and Nikki were there to create the beautiful updos and soft makeup looks that the models had for the shoot.

Everything was inspired by the television show Little House on the Prairie characters Laura Ingalls Wilder and her husband Almanzo Wilder. This is what helped form the theme, and ultimately all of the elements of the shoot so that everything came together cohesively.

A special thanks goes out to all of the incredible vendors that helped make this photo shoot such a success! This was such an amazing photo shoot and team to be a part of!

Prepping for the Super Bowl Half Time Show

The Super Bowl is a huge deal. The viewership of this event is astounding and because of this, all of the elements besides the actual game are very important. The commercials, that cost TONS to make and to get airtime are amazing and the half time show is also incredible. We are so excited that Beyonce is performing at this year’s Super Bowl half time show!

Today we want to go through good, the bad… and well, Beyonce is never ugly! She is such a natural beauty. To prep for her on stage performance on Sunday, we thought it would be fun to go through some of her looks and dissect them. She is such a beauty chameleon that takes chances and is fearless.

This picture is absolutely beautiful. Flawless skin, perfect brows and amazing hair. It just looks so effortless! Not comfortable baring all? Well, BB creams are the perfect solution that can even your skin tone and protect you with SPF for those vacation photos. Want to know more about BB creams, stay tuned for our post coming soon!

This look is a little bit of a beauty blunder for Beyonce. Once you are finished squinting and asking “are those hair sparkles?” you will realize that the thick, black shadow as liner on the upper lid paired with the silver liner on the bottom is not a good look for Beyonce!

We adore this photo! Beyonce looks amazing with her piecey, textured front bangs. And we can’t stop staring at those eyes! Not many people can pull off full, thick, black eyeliner without looking like a raccoon, but Beyonce does it SO well!

Compared to the last photo, we aren’t loving this look or this eyeliner on her. Her skin is looking a little washed out and her lip color looks a little messy. This look was close, but not quite for Beyonce.

We’re digging this retro-glam look for Beyonce. Her hair reminds us of many of the retro hairstyles we have done at weddings and photo shoots. You can never go wrong with this look! We love the subtle, yet noticeable contour and how the lips and eyes were minimal.

This picture looks like a much younger Beyonce. Perhaps her Destiny’s Child days? Her teased, half-up hairstyle along with her pink cheeks and overly highlighted face looks like a version of Beyonce that we haven’t seen in years! We love the more mature look she has now.
That’s more like it! We love how this new mom can leave the house and go to a basketball game with TV cameras and paperazzi without looking so overdone. The bangs look great on her. And her face is clean and matte with little, to no eye makeup or lip color.

Beyonce with brown hair! We much prefer the honey-blonde hue that she normally wears, but this brown still looks good on this diva. Her fushia lips looks great and it is paired with a smokey eye. The fushia was picked up in the eye shadow used on her crease which has a pinkish hue. This reminds us of a recent bride who asked for pink eye shadow on her wedding day!

The side-braid! We love how chic, yet undone and laid back braids look. She glams up the braid by wearing silver shadow with a hint of sparkle and darker cheek color than usual. Oh yeah, and the navy sequin outfit glams it up as well!

Here is Beyonce accenting her gorgeous diamond earrings with her eyeliner- or is it the other way around? We love when people push the boundaries and we think Beyonce pulled this look off. The hint of silver at the outer corner of her eye between her bottom and top liner is obvious, but not obnoxious.

Speaking of matching earrings with eye makeup. We spy some incredible navy shadow that goes splendidly with Beyonce’s amazing earrings. Want to know the secret to pulling off navy eyeshadow without looking like a clown? Go matte! Blending with the black, the navy gives enough pop to the eye without going overboard with shimmer. We love this look!

We are all about taking beauty risks, but we don’t think that this one paid off for Beyonce. Yellow shadow has made a come back and can look quite stunning if done correctly. The shadow color looked great as a contrast against the emerald earrings and outfit. To take this look from OK to amazing, we would pull the hair back into a chic high pony and add some extra liner to the upper lid at the outer corners. Like the navy eyeshadow she also wore, we want it to pop, but not to be too overwhelming!

This is the only “no, no, no – what were you thinking” look on our list. We love the hair, earrings, skin and lips, but the eyes throw it all off. She looks like a frost queen. We are used to Beyonce having incredible, smouldering eyes and this shadow and liner choice washes her out.

Beyonce can never go wrong au naturale. We love that her eye makeup is minimal and that her skin is fresh and clean. There is a hint of apricot blush and an amazing highlight job down the center of the nose and on the cheeks. It’s a flawless and youthful look.
For Beyonce’s performance we hope that she turns on the glam and comes out looking incredible as always. We are excited to be entertained. The dancing, singing and showmanship that she has is always so amazing.
Are you excited to see Beyonce perform this Sunday? Which song do you hope she performs?

Gatsby Continues to Inspire

It’s going to be a Gatsby year! As we described in our last post, we love the retro-glam feel of the 1920s. We are glad that they are back again and hope that the release of the feature film inspires clothing lines, accessories – and best of all – makeup!
It was so great to be a part of Southern Bride and Groom‘s Gatsby-themed photo shoot. They just wrote a great blog post about the shoot with mention of all of the great vendors involved in pulling everything together.
We love that this shoot has been so well-received. We’re very proud to say that we have been featured online and in their print publication for this shoot.

When observing the hair and makeup trends of the 1920s, the hairstyles were mostly short. In 1926, the Eton Crop came to be and it was considered shocking to older generations because a hair was a source of pride for women and their view was that it should be kept long. In the 1920s the short, almost masculine hairstyles were rampant.

Here is Hollywood’s take on Gatsby style.

What is your favorite part of Gatsby-style – the hair, the makeup, the accessories, the hair pieces? We would love to hear about your Gatsby inspiration!
