NACE: Styled Shoot Competition

There is nothing like a little competition to get the creative mind going! This month I was fortunate enough to attend a National Association of Catering and Events’ (NACE) meeting. Each meeting has a different subject and theme, however this specific event was designed to talk about PR Strategy and how to utilize styled shoots for your creative business.  A styled shoot is how vendors are able to collaborate together to market and showcase their services. These styled shoots often end up on blogs, in print and on marketing literature.

What better way to show what these vendors learned by throwing them right into a competition! The groups were split into three teams that were asked to choose from several different elements and create a themed styled shoot. There were floral arrangements, props, models and outfits for a Bohemian, Romantic and High Fashion look. As a stylist, I had so much fun working with my fellow artists to create these looks with our models. Makeup and hair can truly transform the mood you are looking to create.

The teams all had such different ways of putting together the same concept. Our Romantic model is wearing a soft low chignon with a soft classic bridal look.

It was interesting to note that this team chose the Romantic model for their bohemian look! That floral headpiece really changes the whole feel of this look!

We had so much fun putting together the High Fashion look! Its not everyday you get to break out your green and blue eyeshadows. I believe this look was inspired by a peacock. The models brilliant eyes just wear this look so well!

Her hair needed to compliment this look. She needed height and texture to compliment such a bold look! It paired perfectly with her sequin gown.

The bohemian model was a real treat to put together! Who doesn’t love a tousled curl look with some braids?

This model had the most stunning blue eyes and I think this soft smokey eye just compliments them so well!

We so enjoyed styling the guys for the shoot, as well.  There’s more to male grooming before they get in front of the camera than you think! This winning shoot is featured on the Weddings magazine blog here and we encourage you to hop over and check it out.

Styled shoots are all about putting different elements together to create a cohesive look. Hair and makeup is such a huge part of this as it can affect the overall outcome. You can see more photos and read more about the event on Southern Bride & Grooms blog.

We’d love to hear your thoughts on these shoots and any ideas for upcoming styled shoots we have in the works! Tell us what you’d love to see more of or maybe what you think you’ve officially had your fill of. Real MYD Wedding at the Duke Chapel in Durham, NC: Jessica + Jason

Jessica was absolutely stunning on her wedding day.  For her bridal hair and makeup, she chose a fresh, clean palette of roses and pinks to highlight her porcelain complexion.  Her hair was neatly secured in a textured updo that allowed all the focus to be on her amazing cathedral veil.  Check out these lovely images by Kate Headley Photography and let us know what you think about Jessica’s look by MUA: Jen B, Hair: Kerri and Kathy!

And finally, cheers from the Fearrington Village Barn for the reception.  Erin McLean Events did a great job with planning and executing this beautiful wedding.

Congratulations again Jessica and Jason!

MYD Loves Senior Portraits!

Senior portraits are a great opportunity to get photos that you can give to your friends before graduation, and that you can keep forever. Senior portraits are also a great time to have your hair and makeup done professionally to ensure that you look flawless in photos.
At Makeup for Your Day, we partner with photographers to ensure a natural and polished look that captures the unique personality of each senior.
There was an awesome and incredibly talented team working with Samantha Jayne for her senior portraits. Makeup for Your Day’s talented artist and stylist Kristin worked with Samantha Jayne to give her the beautiful and natural look that she wanted. Stephanie Spencer was there to capture her personality throughout the day for the beautiful photos that you see below.
Not only is it a fun experience to be pampered and look and feel great infront of the camera, but it is also so rewarding to have beautiful and timeless photos that you will enjoy forever!

MYD is featured on the Wedding Chicks Blog!

We are so excited to share that a photo shoot that we were a part of was recently featured on Wedding Chicks! This wedding blog is ranked top three worldwide, boasting almost 40, 000 Facebook fans and around 50, 000 Twitter followers!

We absolutely loved being a part of this shoot. We were able to work within the vintage theme and created the most beautiful curls and red lips. The retro pin curls, pink cheeks and red lips look amazing in the photos and give off a romantic, retro vibe that we love!

We were so excited to work with such an incredible team on this shoot, including Live View Studios, Ruche, Uncommon Gatherings Vintage, Linacucina LLC and Embellished Blooms

Gatsby Continues to Inspire

It’s going to be a Gatsby year! As we described in our last post, we love the retro-glam feel of the 1920s. We are glad that they are back again and hope that the release of the feature film inspires clothing lines, accessories – and best of all – makeup!
It was so great to be a part of Southern Bride and Groom‘s Gatsby-themed photo shoot. They just wrote a great blog post about the shoot with mention of all of the great vendors involved in pulling everything together.
We love that this shoot has been so well-received. We’re very proud to say that we have been featured online and in their print publication for this shoot.

When observing the hair and makeup trends of the 1920s, the hairstyles were mostly short. In 1926, the Eton Crop came to be and it was considered shocking to older generations because a hair was a source of pride for women and their view was that it should be kept long. In the 1920s the short, almost masculine hairstyles were rampant.

Here is Hollywood’s take on Gatsby style.

What is your favorite part of Gatsby-style – the hair, the makeup, the accessories, the hair pieces? We would love to hear about your Gatsby inspiration!

MYD Beautifies Southern Bride & Groom’s 2013 Fashion Spread

We are so proud to present this fashion spread from Southern Bride and Groom’s latest issue. We were excited to be a part of this photo shoot, working with a variety of models to do many different hair and makeup looks.
This photo shoot feels so fresh and it is a great way to start the new year. The goal was to achieve a fresh and flawless face and then to transform the model’s hair into a completely different hairstyle with each new outfit.
We loved being able to do a few updos. These are always such neat, classic and elegant looks. We also loved being able to do some loose curls, a half-up-half-down look and also a side-ponytail.

There were a variety of very talented people at this shoot. Thank you Southern Bride and Groom for orchestrating a great shoot, and asking us to be a part of it, thank you Dara Blakeley for your beautiful photographs and to The Umstead Hotel for hosting the photo shoot. Feel free to contact us if you would like a copy, or contact one of the many distributors in North Carolina.

We loved being a part of this photo shoot and bringing int the new year with some fresh looks. For more hair and makeup inspiration, check out our Pinterest page! MYD Glams Up A Great Gatsby Photoshoot

It’s 2013, but it is feeling more like the 1920! With a new film releasing this year based off of the classic novel written in the 20s, Gatsby fever is sweeping the nation. There is nostalgia in the old, classic details of the 20s that are embodied in this beautiful photo shoot orchestrated by Southern Bride and Groom. The shoot took place at Second Empire Restaurant and Tavern and turned out beautifully – we loved being a part of this shoot!

There were many talented vendors for this photo shoot including gowns from Tre Bella Bridal, photos by Renee Sprink Photography, flowers from Tre Bella Flowers, Your Special Day Weddings & Special Events and accessories from Bel Canto Designs. (For full list, see the green box in photo 2).

This was an amazing shoot to be a part of. Any chance to hop out of our decade and into another one is a creative challenge that we love. We love the red lips, bold eyes and incorporating beautiful hair pieces into the hairstyles.

We’re inspired to dress this glam look down for everyday wear. An easy way to do that is to wear your hair down instead of in an updo. This will make the look more casual, while still allowing a bold hair piece.

Charlize Theron dons a very 20s look on the red carpet. This is a more casual look due to the subdued lips. There is a subtle brown/gold smokey eye, but this look isn’t as bold. This is a perfect look for jeans and a tshirt or a skirt and a blazer – for a daytime look, refrain from statement earrings along with a hair piece, it may look too dressy.

Diane Kruger pulls off her 20s hair and makeup flawlessly. Her hair is pulled into a low bun with two beautiful hair pieces. To keep it from looking overdone, there is no additional jewellery and the lips are a more neutral pink. For makeup, her smokey eyes steal the show, but her professionally highlighted face makes her skin look dewy and fresh.

Nikki and Chris Williams

We just got the pictures back from Chris and Nikki’s wedding in November! We had so much fun working with Nikki, her mom and bridesmaids in Chapel Hill, NC. The wedding was gorgeous, and even more so was the bride. Their ceremony was held at the Presbyterian Church on Franklin Street and the reception was in the Pope Box above the Kenan Football Stadium. Here are some pictures taken by Chris Arrington Photography of the bride and attendants.
