How to Get Beachy Waves – For All Hair Types

Its Summertime! Time to hit the pool, the beaches, the picnics, the bbqs and the patios. One of the best hairstyles for summer is beachy waves. They have a trendy, yet low maintenance look to them and they can be chic but laid back at the same time.
Sometimes it is hard to achieve this look because different hair types have different problems. Straight hair may go limp, curly hair may be too frizzy or colored hair may be too dry. Thanks to The Beauty Department, they give a product recommendation for 8 different hair types to help achieve the perfect beachy wave.
Do you like the look of beachy waves? What are your favorite products or tricks? We would love to know! Let us know via Facebook or the comments box below!

Real MYD Wedding at The Carolina Inn in Chapel Hill: Erica + Matt

After a beautiful wintry snow fall in North Carolina last night we thought we’d share some warm photos of a gorgeous Carolina Inn wedding for you to enjoy hopefully while snuggled up under a blanket with hot chocolate at home!

Our bride, Erica, was stunning on her wedding day with a classic, low updo by our amazing stylist, Shannan and clean, natural makeup by our ever-talented mua, Brenna.

We love the floral addition to her hair.  This little added touch really accentuated her classic style and blended beautifully with her gorgeous bouquet by Tre Bella.

Probably one of our all-time favorite Mother-Daughter moments captured on camera.  Such a sweet exchange!  Huge props to one of our favorite photographers, Cyn Kain, for capturing all these special moments for our bride Erica!

Of course I especially love the exit details by Sally Oakley with the Carolina pom-poms!  Go Heels!  Erica and Matt we wish you the best and thoroughly enjoyed working with you for your big day.  Congratulations from our entire MYD team!

MYD Bride Jessica’s Beautiful Wedding Day Look

It was such a pleasure to be a part of Jason and Jessica’s special day! Makeup up For Your Day had three talented members of our team there to help the ladies get ready. Jennifer B was there to apply beautiful, flawless airbrush makeup and Kathy and Kerri were there to do gorgeous hairstyles for all of the ladies.

Beautiful bride Jessica and eight of the bridal party and mothers got ready at The Washington Duke Inn. From there, Tia from Erin McLean Events, coordinated the travel to The Duke Chapel for an amazing ceremony – and then they were on to The Fearrington for an incredible reception.

Weddings are the best day of a bride and groom’s life, and they are also long! Even though the day is long, the bride and groom still wish it would last forever. The same goes for your hair and makeup! You want your hair and makeup to last through the tears, the toasts, the dancing and everything else. This is why we absolutely love airbrush makeup and always suggest it to our brides.

Airbrush makeup will not fade, transfer or smudge throughout the day. It is waterproof, sweatproof and looks completely natural. Jessica looked beautiful from the start of the day until the end of the day. She was such a gorgeous bride! Thank you to Jessica and Jason for letting us be a part of your special day!

Hits and Misses: The Best and Worst looks of the VMAs

We’ve had time to digest the good, the bad and the completely terrible looks from the VMAs this past weekend. Here are some of the most memorable looks.
Selena Gomez looked beautiful with long, straight hair and berry lips. We think this look is classic, simple and feminine.
Katy Perry, known for taking risks with her fashion and beauty was a miss for us. As much as we love a high pony, it was a little bit over the top with the cheetah turtleneck dress and the grills. Her eyelashes and eyebrows do look fabulous as always though!
Actress Allison Williams wowed us at the VMAs. Although the focus falls to the music performers, we thought she shone bright on the red carpet with her smokey eyes and messy, volumized updo.
Canadian model Coco Rocha looked stunning with her signature red hair in a gelled “punk” do with some smokey eyes. She looked rocker chic and we loved it!
Rita Ora had us looking twice. Ever since Beyonce debuted a shorter hairstyle, we thought that this was her! The glamorous outfit is very Beyonce-esque. Even though it isn’t Beyonce, we still love Rita’s blunt bob, defined brows and nude pink lips.
Miley Cyrus was a huge miss at the VMAs – from the red carpet, to the performances. It was a disaster. As much as we love her matte red lips and brows, her hair, outfits and mannerisms were too distracting. We give her two thumbs down!

We like Taylor Swift’s retro-glam look. She is known for her red lips and her sultry eyes, but what we are loving is her pinned curls. Overall we love everything about this look – good job Taylor!

What were your hits and misses from the VMAs? We would love to know! Let us know via Facebook, Twitter or the comments box below!

Spotlight on: Clinique’s NEW Superprimers!

For anyone who battles redness, dullness or any other discoloration – meet Clinique’s new Superprimers. Many “corrective” primers have been popping up in the marketplace, but these are definitely going to give them a run for their money.
Clinique’s new Superprimers come in 6 different formulas (shown above.) There is one for redness, dullness, sallowness, discoloration, dullness in darker skin tones and a regular primer formula. These primers create a perfect base for your foundation and help to brighten and even out skin tone before the foundation is even applied.
The Superprimer also smoothes out your skin and will help your foundation stay true to its color and apply evenly. Once you apply your foundation and your concealer, set it all with powder and you will be set with a flawless face!

Have you ever tried corrective primers – what do you think? We would love to know! Let us know in the comments box below!

Dandruff? How to get to the Root of the Problem

Dandruff can be such a nuisance to deal with. Not only can it be itchy and uncomfortable, but it can also be very visible and annoying. Dandruff can be caused by a variety things including stress, build up of hair products, weather changes and hormones.
There are a number of products sold that deal with dandruff, but there are also some natural approaches you can take to help keep the dandruff at bay.
Brush your Hair Regularly

Brushing your hair has a variety of benefits including that it stimulates your hormone and oil-producing glands keeps the pores of your scalp open which allows them to breathe and retain their natural oils. Brushing your hair will also massage your scalp and evenly distribute oils to keep your scalp naturally moisturized.

Keep your Scalp Moisturized

If you live in dryer or colder climates, your dandruff may be caused by your environment. That is why it is important to keep your scalp moisturized. People who are prone to oily hair may wonder how to moisturize their scalp without causing grease

Get back in Balance

This may be the least pleasant suggestion (because of the smell) but this tip really works! Use Apple Cider Vinegar on your scalp. The acidity of this vinegar helps balance the pH of your scalp and breaks down the dandruff. It may smell unpleasant – but the results are worth it! Plus, the smells go away when your hair dries.

Heat it Up

Heat up some oil (you can use olive oil from your kitchen) and use a cotton ball to dab and rub the warm oil into your scalp. This will help remove any dandruff and get the oil right at the root of the hair. The hot oil will open pores and also lock in moisture.

How to Prevent your Hair Color from Fading

You know that “I just walked out of the salon with perfect color and feel great” feeling? Then you know that disappointment when your hair color starts to fade and look less vibrant and amazing than when you first got it done.

Luckily, there are a number of ways that you can slow the fading process down – even if you can’t prevent it completely – these things will help keep your hair color looking great for longer!

Don’t Wash Everyday

If you can, go two or three days without shampooing your hair. Instead use a combination of dry shampoo and creative updos to allow for longer time between washes. This will help prevent shampoo from striping the hair color and cause fading. This brings us to the next point…

Choose the Right Products!

Don’t use regular products on colored hair if you want the color to last. Specially formulated color-protecting products will help restore moisture and maintain the hair color for a longer period of time while avoiding ingredients that will strip the color.

Protect your Strands

UV rays can penetrate the your hair cuticle and oxidize, or bleach, the color. So opt for a hat or a leave-in conditioner or spray with SPF protection. There are tons of products in a variety of price ranges that have UV protection for you hair.

Pro Tips for Primers

Whether you live in a wicked hot climate, have super long days, or just want your makeup to stay – primers are key to prepping you for products. This will give you better application, better staying power and an overall enhanced look. So here are some tips for all of the preppers out there.

Prep those lashes!

This is a relatively recent thing, but prepping your lashes can make them appear fuller and longer with a layer of lash primer. Many of them contain serum that will make your eyelashes healthier, which is a great added bonus!

Less is More.

Remember, this isn’t the actual product and shouldn’t make a visible different so you don’t need to layer it on! Just lightly apply your primer to your face, lids and lashes so that when you apply the actual product it will apply evenly.

Don’t Forget your Eyes!

Eye primer works as a 3-in-1. It absorbs oil that will prevent your makeup from creasing, it softens any fine lines and lastly, it provides staying power for your makeup. So don’t skip this step!

Your Lips need Love Too.

To prime your lips you don’t necessarily need a lip primer. Just exfoliate and use whatever lip treatment you prefer so that when you go to apply product to your lip, whether it be gloss, lipstick or lip stain – it will apply neatly and evenly.
