6 Tips for Incorporating Nature in Your Raleigh Wedding

6 Tips for Incorporating Nature in Your Raleigh Wedding

Get me to the park on time! Outdoor weddings are a growing trend right now. The idea of exchanging vows in the beauty of nature has expanded from backyards, parks, and beaches to ranches, barns, and even wineries!

Any wedding venue, whether outdoors or in, is enhanced with a touch of nature. That includes everything from the decorations and gifts to the bride herself.

Ways to incorporate nature into the tying of the knot are limited only by your imagination. It’s a great way to get the bride, groom, family, and friends involved in the hands-on adventure of creating an experience that is uniquely yours!

Here are a few ideas for starters.

1. Prep Your Venue

If it’s an outdoor setting, make sure the lawn and plants are neat, trimmed, weed-free, and pruned. Indoors or out, see that electrical lines to lights, speakers, and instruments are tidy and out of the way, not only for appearances but for guests’ safety.

2. Consider Potted Plants

You can place these practically anywhere — at the end of seating rows and on prosceniums, stages, and altars. Arrange them in asymmetrical groupings with taller ones at the center, and shorter ones huddled around. Choose blooming plants that complement the surroundings and your color scheme. Orchids are favorites because they come in such a large variety of shapes and colors. Hibiscus can give the event a tropical flair, and you can’t miss with roses. Hint: Plants with heart-shaped leaves such as philodendron and anthurium impart a subtle message. Keep in the spirit of the season — poinsettias around Christmas, lilies at Easter, red, white and blue blossoms in July, and garnish with gourds in autumn.

3. A Flower for Her Hair

Continue the nature theme with a complementing flower, crown, or wreath in the bride’s hair. Garlands are challenging traditional bouquets as a wedding favorite. Blooms intertwined in vines may be a simple shoulder wrap or trail elaborately down the train. Smaller versions are great for bridesmaids.

4. Think Arbors and Bowers

Arbors and bowers can be constructed from a trellis available at any garden center. Intertwine with vines of ivy and a few blossoms for color. Weave in eucalyptus branches to add a pleasant, fresh aroma.

5. Hang Baskets, Ferns

In an indoor setting, Use a suspended frame to allow English ivy or fern fronds to dangle above guests. Just make sure the frames are sturdy and securely suspended.

6. Trees

The owners of the hall you rented might frown on planting trees in their space, but you can always use potted trees to add diversity to your venue (and cover up things you don’t want showing). Topiary trees make excellent sentinels at the entrance of the aisle. Instead of buying, you might find them at rental companies that carry wedding supplies. Good artificials can work as well as real trees.

In addition to beautifying the decor, touches of nature work as gifts. Small potted succulents make excellent take-home favors. So do wildflower seeds in decorated packets. Tiny glass terrariums are more expensive, but always a hit.

Adding a little extra nature to an outdoor wedding has a practical benefit. If the weather takes a turn for the worse, you can always take your portable forest inside at your Plan-B setting. Another practical advantage is that with some careful planning, nature weddings can cost less than a traditional formal ceremony.

Don’t be tied to old-fashioned ideas and rules. It’s your wedding, so make it the once-in-a-lifetime experience you want it to be!

September Beauty Challenge!

Hello all my favorite MYD Beauties!  I hope you’re enjoying these back-to-school days and settling in to your new routines as we transition in to fall.

It’s well known with family and friends that summer time is definitely my favorite time. Being super cold-natured, I actually despise the winter.  That all being said, I do have very fond feelings about autumn simply because it’s the best time of year to express yourself through fashion and beauty.  I mean, hello, the 2 inch thick fashion Bible (Vogue) launches all of the fall “must-haves” and “oooh I wish had the money to splurge on” goodies!

kendall-wearing-gucci

This year, I’ve challenged our MYD team (and subsequently YOU!) to choose 3-4 products in  your cupboards, vanity, shelves, showers, etc to finish off during the month of September. Why?  Well, to make room for all the new fall arrivals, of course!  We’re calling this our #septempties challenge.

empties-spring-2016

We’re going to upload videos and posts throughout the month from our team finishing off some of their products from home and we’d love to hear about yours!  Upload a video of yourself with your challenge products or your finished off #septempties and let us know your thoughts: did you love it, hate it, would you buy it again? We’re all beauty junkies here so we can’t wait to hear your reviews! Most of all…we want to know what you’re finishing things off FOR. What are you replacing your empties with?!

Stay tuned for my own video update later this week.  I’ll be polishing off these gems this month:
loreal-shampoo

Hair Product Category: L’Oreal Professionnel Mythic Oil Shampoo and Conditioner

jergens

Body Product Category: Jergens Natural Glow +Firming Daily Moisturizer

ysl-baby-doll

Makeup Product Category: Yves Saint Laurent Baby Doll Mascara

eminence

Skincare Category: Eminence Organic Skin Care Strawberry Rhubarb Dermafoliant

I can’t wait to see your videos and hear all about your progress with emptying out your current products! Please use the hashtags: #mydbeauty and #septempties so we can easily keep up with all your videos to respond.  Of course, we’d love you to tag us, too @makeupforyourday on Instagram and @makeup4yourday on twitter. Good luck!

XOXO,

Inspiration: 15 Bohemian Wedding Updos

Summer is the perfect time to let your inner hippie out and rock a perfectly imperfect bohemian updo. You wont reach for the smoothing serums for any of these looks. They are defined by their organic, “messy” style that often incorporate braids or natural textures. Best worn on second-day hair or with a texture spray to give the hair a little natural grit. Let us know in the comments below which style is your favorite!

1.

bohoinspo9
Textured curls with flyaway pieces are essential for a boho look

2.

bohoinspo14
Let pieces fall out. Nothing should look too perfect

3.

bohoinspo7
Combine different braiding patterns to create depth and texture

4.

bohoinspo11
Add a flower crown for instant bohemian style

5.

bohoinspo4
Braid. Everything.

6.

bohoinspo3
Keep texture organic and earthy

7.

bohoinspo1
Add Real Flowers to keep things soft and romantic

8.

bohoinspo2
Keep cool by braiding away from your face if you are the type that will feel the need to touch your hair

9.

bohoinspo13
Let it all hang out. Keep it low and loose.

10.

bohoinspo6
Boho twist on a classic chignon by keeping the hair textured and piecey

11.

bohoinspo5
Tendrils aren’t just for face framing! Let them cascade down the back too

12.

bohoinspo8
Sneak a braid into the bun to create a unique texture

13.

bohoinspo15
Let the braid be the accessory

14.

Bridal Tea Shower Inspiration

Tea Anyone? This darling styled shoot was done at the Glass Box in downtown Raleigh. Bridal showers and parties are such a good excuse to get all dolled up with your girlfriends.

glassboxstyledshoot (136 of 203).jpg

glassboxstyledshoot (184 of 203)This shoot will appeal to our brides who are interested in staying on trend all while keeping with sophisticated southern style. Our bride is wearing a Makeup Forever lip stain with a Lorac Gloss to keep her lips a gorgeous shade of Fuschia all day, even through a tea party. A subtle neutral toned cut crease in her eyeshadow is a soft way of showing off those gorgeous eyes. Kensley is also donning a fishtail top knot. This style can be worn everyday, but with a touch of elegance is transformed into a more refined look.

Our blonde bridesmaid is sporting a textured top knot. While it is more of a street style,  a top knot is the definition of modern ease and simplicity. Brides looking to stay on trend this season are going to be looking for that simple, contemporary look. Don’t you love her subtle pop of emerald in her eyeliner?

glassboxstyledshoot (96 of 203)

Do you spot the hidden braids in our brunette bridesmaids half up/half down look? Braids are a must have for spring and summer hairstyles for weddings this year. By incorporating them into a classic style, it adds a splash of modern appeal. Her lavender eye shadow is the perfect touch to this soft romantic look.

glassboxstyledshoot (149 of 203)

These looks paired so nicely with the fun decor! A small brunch of finger sandwiches and scones go great with a yummy tea. These pops of color from the flowers are a wonderful accent to the all white color scheme of the Glass Box.

3…2…1… Nashville!

Hi MYD fans! Caroline Lucas here, reporting from Nashville, TN. I know you have been waiting on pins and needles wondering what we would be revealing this week and here it finally is! Makeup for Your Day is expanding to Music City!

Photo published in Southern Weddings Magazine with image courtesy KT Merry. Hair, Makeup and Styling by MYD.

Starting in Raleigh, NC and traveling all over for destination weddings we felt like it was time to branch out and explore new territory, and what better fit for our artists than the city that is known for its talent?

At Makeup for Your Day we are always looking for new inspiration, and even though I have only been living in Nashville for a short period, let me tell you, this city is full of it! From festivals and concerts, river views to mountain tops, not to mention all the great food, and growing neighborhoods – Nashville has it all.

So lucky me… I got the opportunity to use this Nashville launch post as an excuse to play tourist in my own city! Come along with me as we scratch the tip of the iceberg on this fun-filled city.

Like most things, to get started, first we need COFFEE! Okay so this might not count as a tourist moment… but can you blame a girl?

Barista Parlor is located in one of my favorite neighborhoods known as East Nashville. A little hip, trendy, and up and coming East Nashville is the place to find awesome food, craft cocktails, and off the charts coffee.

This, my friends, is a whiskey caramel latte and get a load of the DOUGHNUTS! One of each please!….*someone rolls me to my car.  Looking at this all I can think is, “Where can I find a lipstick the shade of that pink glaze”? Talk about the perfect “subtle with a pop” color!  That, my friends, is on our #mydbeauty to-do list!

Alright, alright, now that we’re nice and awake let’s keep it moving. Next stop… The Grand Ole Opry! This place is enormous. It was a beautiful day and good thing because you could walk for days and not experience this whole space.

My brain kept heading straight to all the amazing event spaces. The bridal photo opportunities were endless, and every where you turned was another great piece of Tennessee history. I cannot wait for this to be a regular spot for us. Seeing our artistry on a beautiful Opry bride seems like a dream come true!

Of course, the trip wouldn’t be complete without heading out to Broadway…Nashville’s self-proclaimed “Honky Tonk Highway.” Downtown Nashville is always on. Walking down the street you can hear the talent streaming out of the famous bars like, Robert’s and Tootsies.

medsq_3891884567_28f0f60105.jpg

At Makeup for Your Day, we are known for all the work we do with our amazing brides, but we also do a lot with commercial shoots and head shots, and in a city like Nashville I have a feeling that is going to keep us pretty busy.

Doing hair and makeup meant for lights and stage can be a whole different animal – which is why we make sure to train all our artists and hair stylists on the varying components for each situation. We also make sure that we carry the best products for every situation.

Unlike a lot of people who migrate to Music City, I’m not looking to have my name put up in lights… but I sure am looking forward to seeing the names and faces of our clients up there!

So this concludes the first leg of our Nashville tour. But don’t you worry, there is a lot more where this came from. Our blog, Instagram, and Facebook are going to be filled with bridal inspiration, hair and makeup trends, and our travels from Nashville, Raleigh, the beautiful NC Crystal Coast and Outer Banks, and destinations worldwide! So stay tuned and keep an eye out on all the exciting things Makeup for Your Day will be up to.

We’d love your support in our new endeavor! If you have friends, family or colleagues in the Nashville or surrounding areas that you feel would love our luxury services, please pass our info along and make sure they let us know who sent them! And if there is something you would like to see or a place in Nashville that you find inspiration please leave a comment below. We can’t wait to hear from you!

Thanks again, and we will see you soon!

xoxo,

Caroline and the MYD Beauty Team!

February is Bridal Show Month for Makeup for Your Day! Our final bridal show for February was back in Durham at The Cookery! This venue is also historic and has a very unique and urban feel to it.

Megan and I at the Cookery!

This event had a live band and the guests were encouraged to visit every vendor for a chance to enter a raffle!

Megan and I had so much fun chatting with brides and their fiances about their upcoming wedding plans! We met guests who were just recently engaged and some that were just putting the finishing touches on their events.

Bridal shows are a great way to get to chat with vendors and see venues fully decorated. If you find yourself at a bridal show in the future, please make sure you stop by and chat with us! My favorite part of it all is meeting couples and sharing in the excitement of planning a wedding and getting to know them.

That wraps up our bridal shows before we enter this 2016 wedding season. We’ve got a lot of work to do catching up with all the brides we met at the shows this season! See you at the next show!
